Cate will be in admin & Bruce is our maintenance man. Last month we said farewell to Gary Turner who has taken up a position at Burley s. Lorraine Beard has returned ~somewhat reluctantly~ to the workplace after 3 months long service leave. June saw the retirement of Anna Middleton. Anna has been with Howard Martin Livestock and Howard Martin & Co for 9 years and we will miss her smiling face. We wish Anna, Brett, Annabelle & the expected baby all the best in the future. June also brought to an end the 90 year presence of a member of the Howard Martin family in Chanter Street with the sale of the premises and the Real Estate section only to Graham Callister. We hope the people of Berrigan support Graham in his venture. We will continue to offer all our other rural services to our clients as usual. H H Martin (Henry Howard) worked for the stock & station agency owned by Haines prior to enlisting in WW1 in 1915. On his return he took over the business & traded as ~ H H Martin & Co. The office was located next to the newsagency and is now owned by Dawmac. Howard J Martin moved across the road in the very early sixties after purchasing the old Sammons Edwards furniture & hardware building. The business was rapidly expanding and more space was required. Since August 2003 the Chanter premises have been used for Real Estate only. Due to illness and the need for ease of management the rural merchandise was relocated to a modern, purpose built, drive through facility at Howard Martin & Co Oaklands Rd grain complex. This move has proved popular with our farming clients as it is much easier to access & has more convenient parking. JUNE AGRONOMY NEWS Allison Glover 29/06/06 June has been much dryer than average recording only 17mm to date which is less than half of the 100 year median of 40mm for June. Continuous frosts in combination with the dry weather has led to a rapid decline in feed and increased crop stress. Early season insect pressure was high with RLEM and Lucerne fleas requiring control in pastures and emerging crops. Aphids have since been increasing in numbers with some high levels of infestation requiring control. Variety trials were dry sown at HOWARD MARTIN CO during the end of May / early June including Wheat, Barley, Forage Oats, Barley & Triticale, Field Peas, Canola, Vetch, Canary Grass and Lupins. All varieties are now starting to emerge. Stephens Pasture Seeds also planted three pasture trials: 1 - A dry land site trialling annual and permanent pasture varieties of rye grass and clover at HOWARD MARTIN CO. 2 - A limited irrigation (autumn and spring) site trialling different varieties and mixes of chicory, plantain, clover and rye grass at Camberly Farm on the Finley Rd. 3 - An irrigated perennial pasture site trialling a mix of rye grasses, clovers, Lucerne s, and chicory aimed for dairy production at Peter Tyrells farm also on the Finley Rd. Here s hoping July will prove to be a more favourable month and feel free to have a look at any of the trials as they progress (trial plans available in store).
